If you have been offered a job in China, you will need a Z Visa - the official work visa. The process is more complex than tourist or business visas, involving a work permit and health check. Here is the complete guide for 2026.
The two-step process
Step 1: Your Chinese employer applies for a Work Permit Notification Letter (2-4 weeks).
Step 2: With the notification letter, you apply for the Z Visa at a Chinese consulate (4-7 business days).
Required documents
- Passport valid 6+ months
- Work Permit Notification Letter
- Health check certificate (valid 6 months)
- Employment contract
- Qualification certificates (translated, notarized)
- Resume and proof of 2+ years work experience
After arrival: Residence Permit
Within 30 days of entering China with a Z Visa, apply for a Foreigner's Residence Permit at the local PSB.
Common rejection reasons
- Missing Work Permit Notification Letter
- Health check not done at approved hospital
- Less than 2 years work experience
- Certificates not translated/notarized
