China's visa photo requirements are strict, and even small deviations (wrong size, shadows on the background, glasses) can cause your application to be sent back. Official China visa photo specifications
- Dimensions: 33mm wide × 48mm high (approximately 1.3 × 1.9 inches)
- Background: Plain white, no shadows, no patterns, no other people or objects
- Recency: Taken within the last 6 months
- Face: Full face visible, both ears showing, neutral expression, mouth closed
- Eyes: Open, clearly visible, no glasses (even clear-lens glasses are not accepted)
- Head coverings: Only permitted for religious purposes, and even then the full face must be visible from bottom of chin to top of forehead

The 5 most common photo mistakes
1. Wrong dimensions. Many countries use 35×45mm or 2×2 inch photos. China uses 33×48mm - a unique size. A photo from your local pharmacy in the US, UK, or Europe will almost certainly be the wrong size. Fix: specify "China visa photo 33×48mm" when ordering, or use an online tool to resize.
2. Glasses. China visa photos do not allow glasses of any kind - not prescription, not sunglasses, not clear-lens. Fix: remove glasses for the photo.
3. Shadows on the background. Even a slight shadow behind your head or shoulders can cause rejection. Fix: stand at least 1 meter from the wall, use even lighting, or use a photo-editing tool to clean the background.
4. Old photo. If your photo is older than 6 months or looks different from your current appearance (different hair, weight change, etc.), it may be rejected. Fix: take a new photo.
